MY TAKE ON INVESTING

Like everyone else, there is only one reason why I study, analyse and participate in the financial markets - and that is to make money. But the difference with me and most other people is that I am willing to use anything (legally) possible to do it. If counting the number of cockroaches that I see everyday gives me an edge in the market, I'll do it. If it works, I'll use it; be it keeping tabs on the economy, looking at charts and indicators (technical analysis), looking at value or growth potential (fundamental analysis), profits & earnings + other related market activity (quantitive analysis), through insider activity + consumer surveys (sentiment analysis) and yes even astrology.

I've spent over five years monitoring, studying, observing and trading the financial markets. My quest was to find out what makes the financial markets move, to find something substantial, something that will provide consistent monetary gains. I don't want to just accept what other authors say/write as gospel truth, I want to know why. In 2005, I took a masters degree in finance to see if what they teach in the university adds any value towards investing success - the answer is 'not really'. Investment knowledge builds up with time - what might seem unimportant to you now may become what you need to get you to the next 'level'. Such is my experience with fundamental, quantitative, economic and sentiment analysis.

What you see in this blog represents quite a number of item(s) and technique(s) that have met - like what W.D. Gann says - my '(utmost) satisfaction' and I hope that they can be of use to the investment pilgrim who's also on a quest for understanding and success.

Without a doubt, the biggest news last week was the big selldown that was sparked off by a drop of about 9% in the China Stock Market. All in all, the Hang Seng and Nikkei 225 Indices fell by more than 1,000 points each. The sell off was not a surprise as the stochastics indicator for the Hang Seng was on its way down. The indicators on the Nikkei were also in over-bought region. Those who sold short, bought puts, sold calls, short futures accordingly would've made money. But if you have a day job like everyone else, you probably would not have time to act or capitalise on the drop. The trick is not to trade on the China market itself as one would probably be chasing it down. I would prefer to locate other instruments that lag (or react) to the Shanghai Composite Index. A good example would be the put warrants of the Hang Seng and/or Nikkei 225 Indices listed on another Asian market (e.g. Singapore Stock Exchange).

So now the questions that remain are:
(1) Is the selldown finished? Or is it the first of what is to come?
(2) Is there going to be a bounce?

In just four short days, the short term stochastics of all these indices are now in oversold region. I would opine that the European and US markets are not as affected as the Asian markets (similar to the 1997-98 Asian Crisis).... but I dont want to speak too soon. The market will let us know soon enough. Retail investors (like us) do not have the time nor resources to value the entire market if the GDP for China slows down. That's why it's important that the brokerage house that you are with provide you with facilities that allows you to set trigger points to alert you (either via SMS or email) when something is happening.

SHORT-TERM OUTLOOK:
From the short-term chart below, the Volatility Oscilliator is now off-the-charts (literally), but the PCR (Put-Call Ratio) oscillator is slowing down. The candles have also gone outside of the lower 20-day Bollinger Band. So, I'd expect a bounce coming in soon. It'll be even better if a nice candlestick formation (spinning top, doji, hammer or harami) confirms a short term bottom. Please be mindful that I'm referring to the US market. But the Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan markets would not be too far off as well. But there is every possibility that the selldown will continue; setting trigger points at the correct index values will let you know.

MEDIUM-TERM OUTLOOK:
As of this moment, I have yet to update the Monthly Indicators chart. But the high values at the end of Jan 07 is another reason why the selldown last week was no surprise. The 3-week low of the NASDAQ Composite has already been penetrated on the downside. So what we saw may be the beginnig of another two to three-month bear move. As seen from the weekly chart, two consecutive long weekly down candles are very uncommon and have not been seen in the last two years. I'll wait another week to see what happens, and trade the short-term window in the meantime.

Have a good week!
